THREE FACES OF SPIRIT SUMMER PRACTICE RETREAT IN TORREY

Three Faces of Spirit is a Two Arrows Practice Retreat set in the red-rock country of Torrey, Utah. Each week is intended to deepen your practice: in Zen training, in relationship with others, and with the natural world.

In each of these three weeks you will:

  • Deepen your sitting practice.
  • Improve your relationship skills.
  • Encounter the grandeur and intimacy of the natural world in Southern Utah.
  • Engage embodiment practices for strength, stability, and energetic sensitivity.
  • Connect with a community of dedicated practitioners.
  • Enjoy delicious, healthy meals (with vegetarian options) prepared by our excellent kitchen (Weeks 1 & 2).

WEEK 1 July 31 – August 7: First Face of Spirit: Zen Sesshin
Enter into silence, stillness, and depth through our traditional summer sesshin. Our schedule includes eight hours of zazen, dharma talks, and interviews with Musho Roshi, as well as a period of work practice. There will be time to sit in the natural world and to experience the vast, open, and stable nature of who we are.

The week includes three ceremonies: Monks' home-leaving, receiving the Precepts, and Dharma Combat with the Senior Monk.  The ceremony dates are:

  • Shukke Tokudo –Monday, August 1
  • Jukai–Friday, August 5
  • Shuso Hossenshiki, Saturday, August 6

This week is an exploration of community and interpersonal practice, led by Musho Roshi and senior monks. It will involve sitting practice, communication skills, and working with conflict. Our relationships are intimate - sometimes pleasurable, sometimes difficult. Practicing with them and developing our skills contributes to our ability to appreciate and value sangha.

MORE DETAILS

MEALS: Your registration includes all meals, snacks, and beverages from dinner on your arrival day to breakfast on the closing day. Meals are vegetarian based, with meat as an option at some meals. We serve a variety of foods and have gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives for common items. We are not able to prepare special diets or provide refrigeration space for retreatants.

LODGING: If you are coming to Torrey we recommend making lodging arrangements very early as the Summer season this year is likely to be very busy with more Utah-based visitors. Check lodging sites like Trip Advisor, Expedia, AirBnB, VRBO and similar for availability. Camping on the Zendo property is reserved for staff and monks. Sand Creek RV & Camp is the closest campground to the Zendo, a 5-minute walk.

FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN: We can accommodate a limited number of families with children. Sangha members who have attended retreats in the past are given priority. Please CONTACT US with the specifics of your request. (What dates, how many adults, # of children/ages.) We require that children are accompanied by two adults who can trade off child-care duties. Children's meals are provided for the duration of your retreat for a fee.

SCHOLARSHIPS & WORK-TRADE: Two Arrows Zen offers scholarship support as part of our commitment to diversity and equity. Scholarships, funded by generous members and donors, provide opportunities to enter Zen practice for young people under 35, BIPOC, and those in life transitions. Work-trade opportunities are also available for members in case of financial need or to help offset international travel costs.
